Every Business Says People Matter. Most Are Lying.
Strip away the strategy decks, the tech stack, the office with the nice view. What’s left? The people. And most businesses — from Birmingham boardrooms to Manchester offices to London HQs — are treating them like a line on a spreadsheet.

Let me tell you about a moment that changed everything for me.
I was sitting in an open office. In London. Sleek tables. Scultured chairs. Listening to a leadership team talking about “operational efficiency.”
On the wall behind them was a framed poster. It read: Our people are our greatest asset.
Two weeks later, they made 10 people redundant with a 15-minute Teams call.
No conversation. No support. No dignity. Just a calendar invite and a script.
I watched it happen, and I thought: this is why I do what I do.
“The poster said one thing. The business did another. And nobody questioned the gap.”
THE PROBLEM
HR Became About the Business. Not the People.
Somewhere along the way, HR stopped being about humans. It became about risk management, policy enforcement, and keeping the business out of an employment tribunal. Tick the boxes. Cover yourself. Move on.
And I get it. There’s real legal complexity. Real risk. Real pressure on HR teams to protect the organisation.
But here’s what that approach costs. The bit nobody talks about.
When people don’t feel valued, they leave. Not always loudly. Sometimes they stay physically and leave mentally. They stop going the extra mile. They stop caring. They do the minimum. And the business slowly loses what made it work in the first place. The energy. The ideas. The loyalty that no software platform can manufacture or engagement score can tell.
That’s not a people problem. That’s a leadership and culture problem. And it’s fixable. Whether you’re a start up business or a scaling business anywhere across the UK.
THE TRUTH
I’ve Seen Both Sides. Here’s What I Know.
I’ve worked with businesses across the UK that genuinely put people first, not as a slogan, but as a way of operating. They had difficult conversations early. They invested in their managers. They treated exits with the same care as onboarding. They built cultures where people actually wanted to show up.
Those businesses kept their best people. They had lower absence. Higher performance. Easier recruitment. And when things got hard, and lets face it they always do, their teams pulled together instead of falling apart.
I’ve also worked with businesses that did the opposite. That treated HR as an afterthought until something went wrong. That confused “being compliant” with “being good at people.” That only called an HR consultant when they were already in a mess.
The difference wasn’t size, sector, or budget. It was mindset.
“The best businesses don’t treat people well because it’s the law. They do it because they understand it’s the strategy.”
WHY THIS BLOG EXISTS
This Isn’t Another HR Newsletter.
I’m not going to fill your inbox with employment law updates or templates for your staff handbook. There are plenty of places to get that.
This blog is about the real stuff. The conversations leaders avoid. The moments where the “right” HR answer and the human answer feel like they’re in conflict and how to navigate that. The things I’ve seen work, and the things I’ve seen blow up in businesses that thought they had it covered.
It’s for founders and business owners, wherever you are, who are growing and realising they need to think about culture before it becomes a crisis. It’s for managers who care about their teams but weren’t given any tools to lead. It’s for anyone who’s ever sat in a room and thought: this doesn’t feel right, but I don’t know what to do about it.
Simple. Direct. From lived experience. No jargon.
Because people deserve better than a policy document. And your business deserves HR that actually works.
